» Social characteristics of the school environment:
The school is located in a village with a population of just over 5,000. In terms of employment a large proportion of the jobs in the area are provided by industry followed by the service sector. The influx of immigrants into the area around the village, especially from North and sub-Saharan Africa, which began in the 1980s, continued in the 1990s in the surrounding district, including the village itself. More recently there has been immigration from Latin America and Eastern Europe.
2. Reasons for the Activity

» Methodology and strategies:
- One introductory session on migration. The topic was introduced and pupils worked on it on an individual basis.
- One consolidating session on migration. The topics were introduced in reference to the attitudes and comments from the first session, and work was started with discussion and contemplation.
- One final session on migration. The purpose was to draw conclusions from the topic of immigration and to work on attitudes.
- One session on the topic of sexism. The topic was introduced, and pupils worked on it individually.
- One consolidating session on sexism. The topics were introduced in reference to the attitudes and comments from the first day, and work was started with discussions and contemplations.
- One final session on sexism. The purpose was to draw conclusions from the topic of sexism and to work on attitudes.

3. Development of the Activty
» Why did the activity begin?
The action plan was based on a directive by the Ministry of Education to carry out a number of tutorials which were supposed to take place once a week in the course of the school year. The directive provides precise instructions for part of the content, e.g. learning techniques and careers advice but permits the schools to freely choose the other topics.
» What was the aim of the activity?
The primary aim of the activity is to enable the pupils to think about sexual and racial discrimination.

4. Results
» What has improved as a result of the activity?
In accordance with the measures described and the experts interviewed, the results of the activity were:
- Among some pupils, the understanding of cultural diversity has improved.
- The pupils have dealt with prejudice by discussing and thinking about discrimination.
- The pupils have been made aware of the reality of immigration. In this, the life stories of immigrants and the circumstances, which led to them leaving their countries of origin, were focused on.

The activity was effective in:
improving knowledge about other cultures
encouraging all pupils to participate in the decision-making process
boosting the self-confidence of pupils who felt discriminated against.
